Who is running for Gresham City Council?
Meet Kayla Brown
How long have you been a business owner?
I’ve owned Sugar Cubed for nearly 13 years, starting in my parents’ basement and now celebrating 8 years in our storefront on 1st and Main Street in downtown Gresham. Come on by for cupcakes, cookies, and a coffee too!
How do you show up in the Gresham community?
Other than owning a business and raising my family in Gresham, I have been a part of the Historic Downtown Gresham Association for 7 years and am an active board member and the former president. In this role, I have helped grow the Third Thursday events, seasonal and holiday events, and lead community clean-up days.
I am currently a Gresham Planning Commissioner, and serve on the Gresham Urban Renewal Advisory Committee as well. Both roles are helping support the growth and development of our city with strategic vision.
I am also an active member of my church and help with community outreach on a regular basis.
Kayla Brown is a dedicated small business owner and community leader in Gresham, Oregon. For nearly 13 years, she has successfully run a popular bakery, and 8 years in her storefront in the heart of the downtown Gresham. Kayla is passionate about serving her community, supporting the arts, and finding creative solutions to complex challenges. Her leadership extends beyond her business; she has served as president of the Historic Downtown Gresham Association and continues to contribute as a member of both the Gresham Planning Commission and the Urban Renewal Advisory Committee. Kayla is committed to fostering collaboration and creating a lasting, positive impact in Gresham for future generations.
How long have you been in Gresham?
I moved across the river from Vancouver when I was 18 years old. I’ve bounced around the East County and my husband and I purchased a home in the Rockwood neighborhood in Gresham 12 years ago, and we’ve been there ever since!
Why do you LOVE Gresham?
I love that although Gresham is a large city it has pockets of small-town charm. I love that it is a gateway to so many neighboring cities and towns creating quite the melting pot of diversity. I love that it’s a bit of an underdog City, with a rich history and fast growth, which tells me people really do love living here. I love and value the pride and strong work ethic that shows up all throughout Gresham!
What experience do you have that you think will lend to being a City Councilor?
The organizations that I volunteer with work very closely with the city, so I am aware of what our city’s strategic plans and goals are. I have attended my fair share of City Council meetings to understand the process and the importance of community involvement and active engagement. I am a business owner and proven leader and I understand that it takes collaboration, cooperation, and active participation to get goals accomplished!
